Step Back in Time: Retro Community Dinner at Sugar Water.
Sugar Water is bringing a taste of 1960’s to the table with a Retro Community Dinner, an experience celebrating the flavors and cocktails of the era. Whether you remember the decade firsthand or have only experienced it through classic films and TV shows, this event will transport you back in time for an evening of nostalgia, fine dining, and vintage charm.
To truly embrace the spirit of the evening, guests are encouraged to dress in vintage finery, channeling the effortless glamour of the Mad Men era. Whether you opt for sleek suits, cocktail dresses, or pearls and gloves, it’s the perfect opportunity to step into the past while enjoying a delicious, chef-crafted meal.
What is a Community Dinner:
A community dinner is more than just a meal—it’s an opportunity to gather, connect, and share an experience with neighbors, friends, and new acquaintances. It’s about coming together around the table to enjoy great food, meaningful conversation, and a sense of belonging.
Dana and David Zucker, owners of Sugar Water, began hosting Community Dinners at their home inspired by the documentary on Netflix, Live to 100: Secrets of the Blue Zones. The small group quickly grew and strangers became freinds and new relationships were built. Dana and David knew when they opened the restaurant this would become a monthly event inviting community in to share their heritage, love of food, talents and more.
March Community Dinner:
Community member Kathleen Dolan has helped curate a menu that pays homage to the sophisticated yet comforting dishes that defined dinner parties of the 1960s. Expect classic cocktails, elegant appetizers, hearty entrees, and indulgent desserts, all with a modern twist.
Meet Kathleen Dolan: A Passion for Entertaining
The idea for the Retro Community Dinner began with Kathleen Dolan, a passionate home cook and hostess. Kathleen and her husband, David, are “come heres,” having moved to the Eastern Shore in 2012 after spending their lives in the bustling suburbs of Washington, D.C.
“We grew up in the ‘60s with parents who loved to entertain. Dinner parties are in our blood,” Kathleen shares. From their early days as a couple to today, the Dolans have embraced the tradition of bringing people together through food and hospitality.
Kathleen’s love of cooking was nurtured by her mother, grandmothers, and even her brother, who worked as a chef. Over the years, she has hosted countless dinner parties and events, both in D.C. and in her new home on the Eastern Shore. When her friend Smaro George, who previously organized Sugar Water’s Greek Community Dinner, suggested she collaborate with the restaurant, Kathleen was thrilled.
“I love dinners that aren’t stuffy—where people can have fun, mingle, and enjoy great food. Sugar Water embodies that spirit, both with their Community Dinners and their everyday warm hospitality. I’m excited to be a part of this March dinner and contribute to this wonderful community,” she says.
A Taste of the 1960s
The evening will begin with a selection of classic cocktails from the era, such as the Manhattan, Sidecar, and Stork Club Cocktail. Guests can sip on these timeless libations while enjoying a spread of retro appetizers, from cheese straws to bacon-wrapped dates and more.
The meal will feature a selection of iconic 1960s dishes, including Steak Diane, Chicken Kiev, and elegant sides like creamed spinach and minted peas and of course jello mold. No vintage dinner would be complete without a decadent dessert—perhaps a flaming Cherries Jubilee, Ambrose Salad and more.
A Night to Remember
Sugar Water’s Retro Community Dinner is more than just a meal—it’s an experience. From the carefully curated menu to the timeless atmosphere, this event promises to be a celebration of food, and community.
